Family Catechesis: Households of Faith
Saint Vincent Basilica Parish is committed to partnering with parents and guardians to develop households in which the faith is shared and lived with vigor. Toward that end, the faith formation efforts are designed with the family and household in mind. The program provides many opportunities for families to enrich their children’s learning experiences.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) gives Pre-school through 2nd graders the opportunity to listen and respond to Sunday scripture readings and the Gospel in an age-appropriate language and environment that fosters sharing, understanding, and community. After opening rites, Father invites the children to gather at the foot of the altar, in front of the congregation, to receive a blessing before the CLOW catechist leads the children from the church to the Parish Assembly Room or a nearby classroom.
At CLOW the children begin with prayer and the CLOW catechist proclaims scripture – the same scripture celebrated by the adults remaining in the church, except adapted for children and communicated “in their own language” and “at their own level.”
Saint Vincent Basilica Parish offers CLOW at the 9:30 AM Sunday Mass.
CLOW is a rewarding ministry opportunity for adult volunteers willing to shepherd our youngest parishioners in receiving and understanding the Word of God. If you are interested in joining the CLOW catechist team, e-mail Alicia.
Diocese of Greensburg Curriculum Guidelines
Call to Faith Curriculum
Call to Faith textbook series is deeply rooted in Church Tradition. In its dependence on and faithfulness to both the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the General Directory for Catechesis, it remains true to the magisterium, or teaching office of the Church, and draws from the following sources of Catholic wisdom: Scripture, Doctrine, Lives of Saints and People of Faith and Cultural Customs and Celebrations.
Call to Faith is creative and versatile. It provides children with opportunities to learn in a variety of ways.
The Gathering Experience welcomes the children to CFF and introduces the lesson of the day.
The Primary Lesson presents the main teaching in Chapters 1 and 3 of each Unit.
Special Presentation will present the lesson in Chapter 2 of each Unit.
The mediums of music and art enhances the multiple intelligences of the learner.
Celebration will focus on prayer, prayers of the saints, and people of faith.
Religious Formation in the Home
While the Church teaches that parents are primarily responsible for the faith formation of their children, it also teaches, “The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents.” (CCC 2226)
The parish “is the place where all the faithful can be gathered for the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist. The parish initiates the Christian people into the ordinary expression of the liturgical life; it gathers them together in this celebration; it teaches Christ’s saving doctrine; it practices the charity of the Lord in good works and brotherly love.” (CCC 2179)
It is in this spirit and in accord with the Religious Formation in the Home Policy of the Diocese of Greensburg, that Saint Vincent Basilica partners with Homeschooling parents in the Faith Formation of their children and family.
Families choosing Homeschooling or Family Catechesis as their “formal” Faith Formation option must schedule an appointment with the Director of Catholic Faith Formation to register.
